Anxiety, Depression and Trauma

Anxiety, depression and trauma can have common presentations of feelings of being overwhelmed, or underwhelmed and disconnected from your emotions and the world around you.

It can feel isolating, hard to talk about with others and hard to understand yourself.  Sometimes we rely on 'putting on an act' for the benefit of others in order to get through the day and as part of this process lose who we really are, our identity and our self-belief.

Anxiety, depression and trauma affect our physiology, brain chemistry, ability to think clearly and logically and unable to make even simple decisions.  They can leave us feeling afraid to reach out because of our differences and leave us feeling physically and mentally exhausted.

Talking therapy (counselling, psychotherapy and nature therapy) can help by giving you the safe space you need to explore your feelings, reconnect with yourself and make changes to the way you live your life to find a way forward.  The therapeutic relationship models 'good enough' connections, without any ulterior motive or viewpoint, so that you discover your own authenticity.  Research has demonstrated time and time again the importance of our connectedness with nature.  We have evolved to interact on a biological level when in woods and forests - trees release chemicals into the air that activate the production of reward hormones such as dopamine and serotonin in our brains!  Even just being able to see plants or natural spaces increases our mental wellbeing!

Hypnotherapy is a very effective tool for anxiety such as 'social anxiety' or anxiety related to specific actions (think exams, driving, speaking in public).  By relaxing the body and the mind the parasympathetic nervous system is activated - 'the rest and digest' system - and the sympathetic nervous system deactivated - 'the fight, flight, flop or freeze' response.  This alone reduces the occurrence and intensity of anxiety over the course of therapy.  Then, by changing your 'blue print' from looking for danger and catastrophising to a more logical, reasoning and rational one can improve anxiety dramatically.

Whichever therapy you use, having a clearer understanding of what is happening to you and why empowers you to move forward with your life and gives you valuable tools to take into your future.
